What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck, is a surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tighten the underlying muscles. Many patients choose this procedure after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or simply because they’re bothered by loose skin and a bulging stomach that doesn’t improve with diet and exercise.

It’s not a weight-loss operation , it’s about reshaping and restoring the abdomen so it looks flatter, firmer, and more in line with the rest of your body.

Who considers a abdominoplasty?

I often see patients who say: “No matter how much I exercise, I can’t get rid of this loose skin,” or “After pregnancy, my stomach just doesn’t look the same.” This is because stretched skin and weakened abdominal muscles don’t always bounce back on their own.

The most common reasons people ask about abdominoplasty are:

  • Loose or hanging skin after weight loss
  • Separated or weakened abdominal muscles after pregnancy (diastasis recti)
  • Stubborn fat deposits around the midsection
  • A desire for a smoother, more toned-looking stomach

For the right candidate, the results can be transformative , not only physically, but also emotionally.

How the procedure is done

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2–4 hours. An incision is made low on the abdomen, typically just above the pubic area, so it can be hidden under most clothing or swimwear.

From there, I remove excess skin, tighten the underlying abdominal muscles if needed, and reshape the area for a flatter contour. In some cases, liposuction is combined with the tummy tuck to further refine the waistline.

Finally, the skin is carefully redraped, and the belly button is repositioned to look natural with the new shape.

Recovery and healing

Recovery after a tummy tuck takes some time, but with proper care, most patients are pleasantly surprised at how manageable it is.

  • First week: expect swelling and tightness in the abdomen. You’ll wear a compression garment to support healing.
  • 10–14 days: most patients feel ready to return to light daily activities or desk work.
  • 4–6 weeks: heavier exercise and lifting can gradually be resumed.
  • 2–3 months: swelling improves significantly, and results become more visible.

It’s important to follow aftercare instructions closely , this ensures smooth healing and the best long-term outcome.

The results

The most rewarding part of this procedure is seeing how much it boosts confidence. Patients often tell me they feel more comfortable in their clothes, happier looking in the mirror, and free from the discomfort of sagging skin.

Scars are part of the procedure, but they are placed low on the abdomen and fade with time. For most patients, the trade-off is well worth it.

Abdominoplasty: FAQs

No. Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. It’s best suited for patients who are already close to their ideal weight but struggle with loose skin or weak abdominal muscles.

There will be a scar along the lower abdomen, but it’s placed low enough to be hidden under clothing or swimwear. It fades over time.

Yes. It is often combined with liposuction or as part of a “mommy makeover” to address breasts and abdomen together.

With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, results are long-lasting. Pregnancy or significant weight changes may affect the outcome.
