What is a Brazilian butt lift?

The Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, has become one of the most popular body contouring procedures worldwide. Unlike butt implants, which use silicone, this procedure uses your own fat to enhance the shape and projection of your buttocks.

In simple terms, it combines two procedures in one: liposuction to remove fat from areas like the abdomen, waist, or thighs, and fat transfer to reshape and add volume to the buttocks. The result is a more contoured waistline and fuller, natural-looking curves.

Why patients ask for it

Many people come to me saying: “No matter how much I exercise, my butt just doesn’t change shape.” Or: “I’d like more curves but in a natural way.”

The BBL appeals to patients because:

  • It enhances the buttocks without implants
  • It slims other areas (like the waist) through liposuction
  • It creates a more proportional, hourglass figure
  • Results look and feel natural since the fat comes from your own body

How the surgery is performed

The procedure is done under general anaesthesia. First, I use liposuction to carefully remove fat from donor areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, or thighs. This step not only collects the fat for transfer but also sculpts and slims the surrounding areas.

The harvested fat is then purified and strategically injected into different layers of the buttocks to achieve the desired shape, projection, and symmetry. Because the fat is placed in small amounts and multiple layers, it integrates better with the existing tissue and creates a natural result.

The surgery usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on how much liposuction and fat transfer are required.

Recovery and healing

Recovery after a BBL requires special care because you’ll need to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for a couple of weeks.

  • First 2 weeks: patients use a special cushion or lie on their stomach to avoid pressure on the fat grafts.
  • Swelling and bruising are normal and gradually improve.
  • After 4–6 weeks: most daily activities, including exercise, can be resumed.
  • Over the next months: the body settles, and the final shape becomes clearer.

It’s important to note that not all the transferred fat will survive. On average, about 60–70% of the fat remains permanently, while the rest is reabsorbed naturally by the body.

The results

When performed correctly, the Brazilian butt lift doesn’t just add volume to the buttocks — it reshapes the entire body. The waist looks slimmer, the thighs more contoured, and the overall silhouette more proportional. Patients often say they feel more confident in their clothes and more comfortable with their figure.

Results are long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.

The fat that survives transfer remains permanently. With a stable weight, results can last for many years.

You’ll need to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for the first 2 weeks. Special cushions help protect the fat during healing.

Yes. Since the BBL uses your own fat, there’s no risk of implant-related complications. However, it must be done with the correct technique for safety.

Enough donor fat is required from other areas of your body. During your consultation, I’ll assess whether you’re a good candidate.
