Acne is more than skin deep

Acne can be frustrating, painful, and for many people, deeply discouraging. I meet patients who avoid mirrors, skip social events, or layer on makeup just to hide their skin. Acne isn’t just a teenage problem either , many adults continue to struggle with it.

The truth is, acne is complex. It’s caused by overactive oil glands, clogged pores, bacteria, hormones, and genetics all playing a part. And while creams and medications can help, they don’t always give lasting relief. That’s where laser treatment steps in.

How laser treatment helps

Laser acne treatment works in two main ways:

  • Reducing oil production: The laser energy targets sebaceous glands, calming their activity so they produce less oil.
  • Fighting bacteria and inflammation: The light energy helps destroy acne-causing bacteria and reduces redness, calming breakouts.

In addition, some laser settings stimulate collagen, which helps repair acne scars and improve skin texture over time.

What a treatment session feels like

Patients are often nervous before their first session, but most are surprised at how gentle it is. The skin is cleansed, protective eyewear is applied, and the laser is passed across the affected areas.

It feels like mild warmth or a light snapping on the skin , not painful, just unusual. If you have sensitive skin, I can apply a numbing cream beforehand. Each session usually takes no more than 20–30 minutes, and you can go back to work or school right afterwards.

After the session

Right after treatment, the skin may look a little pink, almost like a light sunburn. This usually fades within a few hours to a day. Makeup can be applied the next day if needed. Over the following weeks, you’ll notice breakouts becoming less frequent, less severe, and easier to manage.

How many sessions are needed?

This varies, but most patients see noticeable improvement after 4–6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. The number depends on how severe your acne is and whether we’re also targeting scars.

For some, laser treatment is used alongside other medical treatments. Combining approaches often gives the best long-term results.

The results you can expect

Results build gradually. Patients usually notice:

  • Fewer breakouts
  • Reduced redness and inflammation
  • Smoother skin texture
  • Old scars starting to soften

What I find most rewarding is hearing patients say things like, “Doctor, I went out without makeup for the first time in years,” or “I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.”
