Understanding pigmentation

Pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns I see, especially here in Dubai where the sun is strong all year round. Freckles, sunspots, melasma, or general uneven tone , they can all make skin look older and more tired than it really is. And for many patients, no matter how many creams they try, those stubborn spots don’t seem to budge.

Laser treatment for pigmentation is one of the most effective ways to tackle this. Instead of sitting on the surface, the laser reaches the pigment inside the skin and breaks it down so the body can gradually clear it away. The end result is smoother, more even-toned skin that looks fresher and younger.

How the treatment works

The treatment itself is straightforward. After cleansing your skin, protective eyewear is applied. I then use a laser that emits short pulses of light. The pigment in your skin absorbs the light, and this breaks it into tiny fragments. Over the next few weeks, your body naturally clears away the pigment.

During the session, you’ll feel a warm snapping sensation , not painful, but noticeable. For more sensitive patients, I apply a numbing cream to make it even more comfortable.

Each session takes around 20–45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

After the session

Straight after treatment, your skin may look a little pink or feel warm, almost like a mild sunburn. This usually settles within a day or two. Sometimes the treated spots darken slightly before flaking off or fading , this is completely normal and part of the process.

You’ll need to protect your skin from the sun carefully, because sun exposure is one of the main triggers of pigmentation. Sunscreen becomes your best friend after this treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

This depends on the type of pigmentation. Sunspots and freckles may clear in just a couple of sessions, while deeper conditions like melasma usually take more. On average, most patients need between 3–6 sessions for best results, spaced a few weeks apart.

The results you can expect

Results don’t appear instantly, but over the weeks following treatment, you’ll see a gradual fading of dark patches. Skin looks brighter, tone becomes more even, and that tired or “weathered” look softens.

What I love about this treatment is how it refreshes the whole face , even if you only target specific areas, the improvement in overall skin tone makes a big difference.
