Why people consider tattoo removal

Tattoos are often chosen for personal reasons, but over time, feelings and lifestyles can change. A design that once felt meaningful may no longer suit who you are today. Some patients want tattoos removed for professional reasons, others for aesthetic ones, and many simply feel they’ve outgrown them.

Whatever the reason, modern laser technology makes it possible to fade or significantly reduce the visibility of tattoos in a safe, controlled way.

How laser tattoo removal works

Laser tattoo removal relies on the principle of selective photothermolysis , but simply put, the laser emits pulses of light that specifically target the tattoo ink. The energy breaks the ink into tiny particles, which are then gradually cleared away by the body’s immune system.

Different colours absorb light at different wavelengths. Black ink is usually the easiest to treat because it absorbs all laser wavelengths. Brighter colours like green, blue, and yellow can be more stubborn, but advanced laser systems allow for significant fading even with these shades.

What to expect during a session

The process is straightforward:

  • The area is cleaned and, if needed, a numbing cream is applied.
  • Protective eyewear is given to both the patient and doctor.
  • The laser is applied in short bursts across the tattooed area.

Patients often describe the sensation as similar to small snaps of a rubber band against the skin. It is quick, and most tolerate it well.

Depending on the size of the tattoo, a session can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.

After treatment

Immediately after, the treated area may look white or frosted. This fades within minutes, followed by redness and mild swelling. Small scabs or flaking may appear over the next few days, which is a normal part of healing.

Most people return to normal activities straight away, though I recommend avoiding direct sun, swimming pools, and excessive heat until the skin fully settles.

How many sessions are needed?

Tattoo removal is not a one-session procedure. The number of sessions depends on several factors:

  • The size of the tattoo
  • The colours used
  • The depth and type of ink
  • The patient’s skin type

On average, 6–10 sessions are needed, spaced about 6–8 weeks apart. Some lighter tattoos fade faster, while older or multi-coloured tattoos may take more time.

The results

Complete removal is possible in many cases, particularly with black and dark inks. For very bright colours, significant fading is usually achieved, even if a faint trace remains. The goal is to make the tattoo far less noticeable and easy to cover with skin tone.

Safety and effectiveness

Laser tattoo removal is considered safe when performed by trained professionals. Side effects are rare but may include temporary skin lightening, darkening, or mild scarring in very uncommon cases. Proper aftercare is key to avoiding complications.

Tattoo removal: FAQs

It depends on the tattoo’s size, colour, and age. On average, most patients need 6–10 sessions.

It feels like small snaps against the skin. A numbing cream makes it easier, and sessions are usually short.

Many tattoos fade almost completely, especially dark ones. Bright colours may leave faint traces, but results are often dramatic.

Keep the area clean, avoid sun exposure, and follow aftercare instructions. Scabs should not be picked, as this can affect healing.

Yes, with the right laser settings. Darker skin tones may need gentler approaches, which I adjust during treatment planning.
